One of the types of artifacts left over from the Qajar period is playing cards (ganjefe), which are not only tools for entertainment but can also act as manifestations of cultural structures. Qajar playing cards were part of common entertainment among courtiers and some middle-class people. This article explains the characteristics of some Qajar playing cards and aims to examine the visual characteristics of playing cards in order to achieve social and cultural meanings reflected through the images of these artifacts. The research seeks to answer these questions: Which characteristics of these cards can lead to perceptions in order to understand the culture of Qajar society? What connection is visible between the style of illustration of the cards and the paintings of the same period? The materials were collected through library sources and with a historical approach and in a descriptive-analytical manner. The findings show that these cards, which were executed with the lacquer painting technique, are stylistically related to the courtly tradition of painting of that period. It can be stated that Qajar playing cards reflected many aspects of the culture of Qajar society: from the courtly beauty model and Western-style tastes in the designs to the influence of the ruling power. It can be stated that the cards were considered a tool for instilling certain concepts in the audience through entertainment. The findings indicate that while maintaining similarities with official Qajar paintings in the choice of subjects, the playing cards were simpler due to their practical context and thus were able to play a role in establishing visual symbols and forming visual culture in the middle class.
