Niello is an artistic form of metalwork that is obtained from the combination of silver, copper, lead and sulfur and the artists use it for more and better effect of engraved motifs on gold and silver metals. This artistic method of metalworking is popular among the Armenians of Tabriz and Van. Considering the lack of resources about this art and its importance among ethnic groups and artists of different countries, the necessity of conducting the present research is required and knowing Niello art and its decorative motifs in Van and Tabriz art have been chosen as research objectives and the research questions include: 1- How is Niello artistic method performed among the Armenians of Tabriz and Van? 2- What decorative motifs does the Niello art of Tabriz and Van Armenians have? 3-What information do the similarities and differences of the decorative motifs of the two regions provide? In the present research, library, documentary and field information has been qualitatively analyzed with a descriptive-analytical and comparative method.
The research cases include 11 samples, including 5 samples belonging to the Armenians of Tabriz and 5 samples belonging to the Armenians of Van, and one example is a joint product of two regions.The research sampling method is purposeful and based on field data. The results of the research show that the decorative motifs of the Niello art of the two regions are very similar to each other and regardless of the production place of the samples, it can be assumed that all the works have the same origin and Also, the existence of the names of Tabriz and Van on the common sample of the two regions shows that the Armenians of Tabriz and Van had deep cultural interactions with each other.
