During the Safavid era, alongside economic and political growth and the extended duration of the reign,
religious and cultural aspects were also strengthened. This period witnessed the reinforcement and consolidation of artistic productions, which resulted from the rulers' interest in art and culture, as well as the establishment of internal and external relations and closer interactions with European travelers. These interactions led to the creation of a treasure trove of social, political, economic, cultural, and artistic information, the details of which can be accessed through complementary sources.
The aim of this research is to review historical sources, with an emphasis on travelogues, in order to extract cultural information and classify and introduce artistic productions to extract complementary historical data.
The research questions are as follows:
How can the applied arts of the Safavid era be identified based on the travelogue of Jean Chardin? How can the artistic productions of the Safavid era be categorized based on Chardin's travelogue?
Research Method:
In this study, the research is fundamental and theoretical based on its objective, and it is qualitative in terms of method. Regarding the method of data collection, both in the historical and theoretical sections, it is considered a library and documentary research. The data analysis method is also conducted qualitatively.
The results of this research show that Chardin's travelogue, due to the diversity of observations reflected in the form of descriptions of events, significant spaces and locations, cultural and economic activities, important court ceremonies and the upper classes, court rituals, lists of gifts, and more, inevitably provides considerable information about the productions of this period. Additionally, quantitative and qualitative content analysis has led to the creation of a nine-part categorization under the titles of clothing, textiles, carpets, vessels, functional decorations, inscription writing, jewelry, architectural decorations, and others.
