The Henna Ceremony (Hanabandan) is a ritual within Iranian folk culture associated with ornamental applications (ārāyesh-hā-ye afzūdeh) on the hands and feet. The coloring of head and beard hair for men is also part of this ritual. In contemporary urban centers, attention to this ritual has diminished. Conducting such traditions requires specific tools and equipment. One such tool is the Henna Ceremony underlay (Zirpā-ye Hanabandan) – an underexplored object in Iranian art that serves as a medium for expressing folk art.
The aim of this research is to introduce, classify, and analyze the visual and decorative characteristics of this lesser-known artifact of Iranian handicrafts: Henna Ceremony underlays. The research methodology is developmental in purpose and descriptive-analytical in nature and approach. Data collection was conducted through a combination of historical sources and field studies. The research population comprises all Henna Ceremony underlays produced in Iran. The purposive sample, based on accessibility, includes all artifacts (or their documented images and sources) from the Qajar and early Pahlavi periods, sourced from anthropology museums and private collections across 10 locations in Iran (provinces of Fars, Yazd, Kerman, Isfahan, Lorestan, Arak, Tehran, Gilan, and Mazandaran).
The quality and visual characteristics of Henna Ceremony underlays have been identified and classified according to two primary criteria: form (ṣūrat) and motif (naqsh). Results indicate that despite formal similarities, the material of the underlays depended on geography or the economic status of production, and their decorative motifs varied significantly according to material. Motifs on these objects are based on floral, anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, or composite designs incorporating all these elements. Furthermore, most engraved motifs derive more from folk culture and sensibility (farhang o zowq-e ‘āmmeh) than from the influence of established, more formal art forms
